Our Story
From the Kitchen Counter
to a Lancaster Clean Room.
The Susquehanna Roots
Susquehanna Spores didn’t start in a corporate boardroom. It started in York, Pennsylvania, born out of a genuine obsession with fungal agriculture. Eventually, we moved our operations across the river to Lancaster. We are proud to operate our lab just an hour away from Kennett Square—the Mushroom Capital of the World. Operating in the shadow of that kind of agricultural history keeps our standards incredibly high.
The Science of Better Growth
When we first started teaching ourselves the science of mycology, the biggest frustration was the quality of supplies available to hobbyists. We were tired of buying overpriced, contaminated gear from faceless vendors. So, we started making our own.
We spent endless hours researching, testing, and dialing in the absolute best methodologies to achieve explosive, healthy mycelial growth. We didn’t just settle for “good enough.”
- Custom Grain Spawn: We fortify our grain with extra micronutrients and amino acids, giving the mycelium a massive head start the moment it hits the bag.
- Precision Agar: We formulated our agar mixes specifically to minimize the chance of bacterial growth while maximizing the aggressive spread of healthy mycelial networks.
- Tailored Liquid Cultures: We don’t rely on a standard, one-size-fits-all broth. After testing countless variations, we formulated distinct recipes that serve entirely different purposes. Some are designed for rapid, vigorous expansion. Others are engineered specifically for long-term storage. Our storage recipes are crafted to maintain a highly stable pH and feature complex walls that force the mycelium to unlock different enzymes, like amylase, to break them down. Because the mycelium has to expend its energy manufacturing these specific enzymes, it grows slowly, deliberately, and dense. Once it finally produces the right enzymes, it thrives by growing in thick, heavy ropes rather than a weak, fluffy cloud.
Zero Compromise on Quality
We know exactly how devastating contamination is to a grow—there is nothing worse than losing weeks of progress to a dirty syringe or a bad bag of grain. Because we are a small, owner-operated lab, we have the luxury of obsessing over every detail rather than relying on massive, automated warehouse assembly lines where contamination can go unnoticed.
Our quality control is ruthless. Every single master culture is verified on agar, every grain bag is pressure-sterilized to exact specifications, and all inoculation work happens strictly in front of our laminar flow hoods. If a plate, jar, or bag shows even a microscopic hint of something that shouldn’t be there, it goes straight into the trash. We would rather take a loss and start over than ever let a subpar product reach your doorstep. We scrutinize every single batch, because if it isn’t pristine enough for our own lab, it absolutely isn’t going into yours.
A Family Operation
Susquehanna Spores is entirely owner-operated by a husband and wife team. We built this lab from the ground up while balancing day jobs and a service business. We grow the exact same varieties we sell—Lion’s Mane, Oysters, Cordyceps, Reishi, and more—meaning we rely on the exact same supplies we pack into your shipping boxes.
“We aren’t here to price-gouge or make a massive corporate profit. We are here to provide the mycology community with a reliable, trustworthy place to get premium cultivation supplies without breaking the bank.”
Whether you are inoculating your first Uncle Ben’s bag or running a multi-tent commercial fruiting operation, we are glad you are here.
